Inspiring Students to Become Environmental Engineers

Because of your support, every single 5th-grade student in the Escondido Union School District is learning about nature and actively saving it.
Through our Ecosystems in Action program, these young innovators are stepping out of the classroom and into the San Elijo Lagoon. But the field trip is just the beginning.
After observing how the Escondido Creek watershed flows into the ocean, students return to school to tackle a massive challenge: identify a local environmental crisis and design a global solution.
Using professional “Design Thinking” frameworks, the students are prototyping remote-controlled trash collectors to skim debris from the water, launching neighborhood campaigns to swap chemicals for organic fertilizers, and more. Together they are engineering new ways to protect nature while aligning their work with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

For students in the Dual Language Program, the stakes are even higher. These 10 and 11-year-olds present their findings in both English and Spanish to a panel of experts, including school administrators and Nature Collective staff.
Listening to students defend their engineering choices in two languages while pitching a solution for their own neighborhood is more than impressive. It’s a glimpse into the future of conservation.
This transformation is made possible through a powerful collaboration. We are deeply grateful to the Escondido Union School District for its vision in integrating experiential learning into the curriculum.

We extend a special thank-you to the California Natural Resources Agency Youth Community Access Grant Program for supporting our Ecosystems in Action program and you, our donors. Together, you are providing the tools, the transport, and the inspiration that turn a local student into a global protector.
Thank you for believing in the power of environmental education in support of our planet, and for ensuring that this powerful program, continues to grow and reach more talented youth.
