California Ground Squirrel

Spermophilus beecheyi

As far as we know, the California Ground Squirrel is the only squirrel in the reserve. We see them most often around firm dirt banks where they like to burrow. A rodent with a broad appetite, the California Ground Squirrel will dine on the leaves, stems, seeds, roots, and fruit of most plants. For protein, they’ll eat insects, lizards, and even road kill. Listen for their alarm call: a piercing chirp.
