Desert Cottontail

In spring and fall evenings, cottontails are often right out on the trail. Their large, sensitive ears can pick up the faintest sounds from far away. But if you’re quiet, you may still surprise them. They’ll freeze in place, and then bound off in their characteristic zigzag pattern, showing their cotton ball tails.

Fun Fact:
The nimble Desert cottontail can swim, climb trees, and run at an impressive 15 mph.
