Silver Argiope

Argiope argentata

The female of the jewel-like Silver Argiope is often hanging upside down in the center of her large web, thick zigzagging lines radiating from the tips of her outstretched legs. Some researchers say the zigzags, called stabilmenta, camouflage the spider, while others say it attracts prey. Perhaps the stabilmenta have many uses—only the spider knows for sure.

Fun Fact:
Recognize this spider's web by the thick white zigzags of silk radiating from the center.
