Spittle Bug

Aphrophora sp.

During its nymph (or adolescent) stage, the Spittle bug surrounds itself with a protective foam of frothed-up plant sap. This spit-like mass hides the developing insect from predators, and may also protect it from temperature changes and parasites. The adult Spittle bug is brown and dark brown, nicely camouflaged amongst dry leaves. Like other true bugs, the Spittle bug sucks plant juices with its straw-like mouth.

Fun Fact:
What look like wads of spit stuck to leaves are the homes of the Spittle bug nymph.
