Western Snowy Plover
Charadrius nivosus nivosus
Status: Threatened
The Western Snowy Plover’s light back and darker head camouflage it as it forages on beaches strewn with driftwood, stones, and shells. The US Fish and Wildlife Service lists this shorebird as threatened. The population has declined due to many factors, including recreational and other human disturbances, habitat loss due to urban development, and expanding predator populations.
