From Elementary to College, Sandra Aguilar Stays Involved + Inspired with Youth Leadership
“When I go to San Elijo Lagoon, I take a friend and show them what a couple hours of community service can do to help the environment.”

Since Sandra Aguilar’s first elementary school field trip to San Elijo Lagoon, she has continued to connect with us as a volunteer. Sandra inspires kids to love nature even more. Now that Sandra is in college, we asked if she’d like to share about her continued inspirations for being a nature leader with us.
“I take great joy in helping children learn something new every time they come to Family Days,” shares Sandra. “Volunteering helps me grow as a person. I never thought that I would be in front of kids and helping them learn something new.”
Sandra has always loved nature. Sharing this joy with others is the reason she volunteers, first with Family Days, in our partnership with County of San Diego Parks + Recreation. “My first experience was helping kids paint a pot and pick a plant to put in it. That was fun because I always like helping others,” she adds. “I see the joy brought to the children’s faces with all the different interactive activities and the songs.”
Sandra also volunteers at habitat restoration events.
“Planting all those plants and having them grow in such beautiful places inspires us to want to do more,” adds Sandra. “We should all take a part in helping our community, whether it’s with an organization such as Nature collective, or just you and friends or family.”
We look forward to reconnecting with you, our student participants, and everyone near and far through our guided tours, events, and more when our world begins to recover. Because of heroes like Sandra Aguilar, kids will always connect with nature, experience its beauty and healing effects, and work together to protect it now and always.
