Their Winding Path Leads On

Dr. Steve and Norma Chodos are both marathoners who enjoy running and hiking through lagoon trails close to home. Steve explains, “Somehow, when we enter the trails, worries seem to fade away as we immerse ourselves in the beauty and peace of this natural world. During this stressful time of the virus, this has helped us remain positive that the world will heal and there will be a brighter tomorrow.”

Norma and Steve share that in order to help preserve San Elijo Lagoon, they have made a commitment to be active with our President’s Circle to support the work we do. Steve’s former employer, Boeing, is matching their gifts to Nature Collective.

When they moved to Solana Beach 10 years ago, it was because they found a place to call home with surrounding natural salt marsh views.

“Knowing nothing about the lagoon and its environment, we decided to take the volunteer educator training course,” adds Steve, who with Norma, are dedicated to the stewardship of young children exploring and enjoying nature.

For many years Steve + Norma led tours for elementary school students, teaching them about the beauty and wonders of the lagoon and the value of conservation here, and at home.

They acknowledge how becoming “experts” in the world around them inspired a greater appreciation and understanding of the close connection we have to nature. They add, “Introducing children to their connection to nature gave us even more fulfillment.”
