Multicolored Darner

Aeshna multicolor

This brilliant blue and black dragonfly is easy to spot in spring and summer, especially given its size. Its body can be longer than 2 ½ inches. The Multicolored Darner flies almost constantly during the day, often far from water, in search of its insect prey. It uses its weak legs only for perching and for catching prey while in flight.

Fun Fact:
Adult dragonflies are so thoroughly adapted for flight that they're unable to walk.
